SPAN 269 The Representation of Women in 19th and 20th Century Spanish Fiction

Explores the portrayal of women in Spanish realist and neorealist fiction from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We analyze and discuss female identity and social norms in the period, covering topics such as marriage, maternity, religion, class, gender, and sexuality. In doing so, the course will trace the emergence of feminism as women fought for access to education and the right to vote, as well as the later impact of Franco’s dictatorial regime on women’s rights and the effect this had on Spanish society
