HIST 369 Early and Medieval China: History and Material Culture

This course examines the history and material culture of China from the Neolithic Age (ca. 10, 000 BCE) to the Tang-Song transition (around 1000 CE). Readings include primary and secondary sources on Chinese archaeology; political, social, legal, and gender histories; mythology and religions; medicine; environment; writing and manuscript culture. Students will develop an understanding of China’s early and medieval history, primary sources and archives for doing research on these periods, and recent scholarly debates.
