SW 482 Social Work Practice with Intimate Partner Violence

This course focuses on clinical and macro practice approaches to addressing intimate partner violence (IPV) in the United States. Students will learn theoretical and empirical explanations of IPV incidence; how social location affects IPV impact, response, and help-seeking; how to identify, assess, and intervene with and on behalf of people affected by intimate partner violence (i.e., survivors, children and adolescents, people who use violence, and network members); system and policy responses to IPV; and prevention strategies. Students will be encouraged to reflect on how their own knowledge and attitudes may affect their ability to consistently apply a trauma-informed, client-centered, anti-oppressive approach to their work with clients affected by intimate partner violence. Throughout the course, students will engage in self-care strategies to minimize burnout and compassion fatigue.
