SW 255CD Strategies for Effective Communication in Social Work Practice
This course provides students with foundational knowledge that will support the use of effective communication practices in social work. Students will engage in self-assessment and reflection on their own communication styles, examining them in relation to the communication skills that students need to practice ethically as a social worker. Students will be exposed to a variety of social work contexts (e.g., child welfare, domestic violence/coercive control, older adults) and will learn best practices in communication, with an emphasis on interviewing and writing/documentation skills. Students will develop facility with model-based practice via a focus on the Motivational Interviewing model.
